The first written mention about Terchová village comes from the 16th century and its establishment was connected with so - called Wallachian colonization. In those times, the village as well as its surrounding belonged to manorial estate of Strecno castle. It became quite a large village in the second half of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century.

This period was also determined by massive flights of villeins from northwest Slovakia to the deep forests to shirk from their duties. These refugees used to form bigger or smaller parties of highway robbers. The party of Juraj Jánošík, native of Terchova, became the most famous one.

Juraj Jánošík was born in Terchová. The parish register from Varin tells us that he was baptized on 25.01.1688. During his life he used to serve as an emperor´s soldier in Bytča castle troops. As a guardian of a prison he met here Juraj Uhorčík , and joined his robber party in autumn 1711. They used to rob for almost two years until Janošík was caught and sent to trial in Liptovský Mikuláš. He was given the most excruciating sentence on 17.3.1713 - he was hanged by his left ribs.
